How to lock challenges you don’t want students to work on

This helps you pace your class, stop students from rushing ahead, and keep everyone focused on the same content

How it works

Students can see all challenges in a project, but they can only work on the ones you’ve unlocked. Locked challenges stay visible but can’t be opened until you’re ready.

There are two ways to control which challenges are unlocked:

  • When you assign a project for the first time, choose which lessons to open (all challenges in that lesson will be unlocked).

  • After a project is assigned, open or lock individual challenges from the Assignments tab.

Assigning lessons for the first time

  1. Go to a project and click Assign to Class

  2. Choose which lessons to assign:

    • Check the lessons you want to open

    • Leave others unchecked to keep them locked

  3. Select your class(es)

  4. Click Assign

Students can now access and work on the challenges from the lessons you selected. The rest remain locked.

Managing challenges after assignment

You can unlock (or re-lock) individual challenges anytime:

  1. Go to My Classes > [Your Class Name]

  2. Click the Assignments tab

  3. Find the project and click Manage Lessons

  4. Check or uncheck specific challenges to open or lock them

  5. Changes take effect immediately

What students see

When students open their Makerspace, they'll see all challenges in the project - but only unlocked challenges can be worked on.

  • Open challenges: Students can click and start working

  • Locked challenges: Students see them but can't access them until you unlock them

When you unlock new challenges

When you unlock challenges from the Assignments tab, changes take effect immediately. If a student is already in their Makerspace, they can click the "Check for unlocks" button to refresh and see newly available challenges.

Ready to try it?

Head to any project and click "Assign to Class" to start locking challenges for a new assignment, or go to the Assignments tab in My Classes to manage existing assignments.
